My copy of Denis Johnson’s Tree of Smoke which I purchased when it first came out. As you can see, someone (I think it was Andrew) took the liberty to turn the “D” on the front cover into a “P” making it ‘Penis Johnson’ which I thought was immature and juvenille at the time, but now I think it’s kind of funny. The quote on the back is from the book itself and the ‘I saved…’ scribble is from whatever the receipt said I saved. I don’t know why I taped the receipt to the back. I don’t know if using the free Borders gift wrap as a bookcover was considered ‘shrink’ but who gives a shit now, eh?

Today was the day that pages (661-692) actually fell out of my copy of Gravity’s Rainbow.
“This is how one pictures the angel of history. His face is turned towards the past. Where we perceive a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe which keeps piling wreckage upon wreckage and hurls it in front of his feet. The angel would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing from Paradise; it has got caught in his wings with such violence that the angel can no longer close them. This storm irresistibly propels him into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of debris before him grows skyward. This storm is what we call progress.”
